Chair of Trustees
Gavin Whitefield retired as Chief Executive of North Lanarkshire Council in October 2015 following 15 ½ years serving Scotland’s fourth largest authority .
Gavin entered local government in 1976 following a 1 ½ year period working with the Exchequer and Audit Department of the Civil Service as an Assistant Auditor.
He worked 13 years with Clydesdale District Council in Internal Audit, Computer Development and finally Housing.
In 1989 he joined Motherwell District Council as Assistant Director of Housing responsible for finance and administration.
At Local Government reorganisation in 1996 he was appointed Director of Housing with North Lanarkshire Council and in April 2000 become Chief Executive with the same Council and prior to his retirement was the third longest serving Head of Paid Service in Scotland.
Gavin was also Clerk to the Lieutenancy of Lanarkshire and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and from November 2007 to November 2008 was Chair of SOLACE(Scotland).
In June 2011 he was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to local government in North Lanarkshire and in August 2016 was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant in the Lanarkshire Lieutenancy.
Currently he is Chair of the Improvement Service Audit Committee ,Treasurer of Youthlink Scotland, a Trustee of the Motherwell Football Club Community Trust and a Board Member of the Well Society which has recently secured fan ownership of the Club.
Married to Grace he has two grown-up daughters, stays in the village of Kilncadzow and in his spare time enjoys football (watching Motherwell FC and playing five-a-sides) and hillwalking (having completed 117 Munros to date).
